Medicare Wellness
A Medicare Wellness Visit is a free preventive exam designed to assess your health risks and help you stay well. It is available to individuals enrolled in Medicare Part A and B and comes in two forms:
-
Initial Preventive Physical Examination (IPPE): Also known as the “Welcome to Medicare” visit, offered within the first 12 months of enrollment.
-
Annual Medicare Wellness Visit (AMW): A yearly visit available after your first year on Medicare.
These exams are conducted by a team of healthcare professionals including schedulers, nurses, medical assistants, billing staff, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians.
Important: Medicare does not cover annual physical exams. A Medicare Wellness Visit is not a physical.
During your visit, our team will assess your current health and identify any risks that could lead to preventable illness or injury. If needed, we will recommend follow-up care at Boyd Memorial Hospital or a facility of your choice.
You will leave with a written summary of your risk factors and health recommendations to share with your primary care provider.
Examples of risks assessed include:
-
Tobacco, alcohol, or drug use
-
Medication side effects
-
Frailty or malnutrition
-
Depression or memory issues
-
Immunization status
-
Fall risk
Common screening tools recommended may include:
-
Mammograms, Pap smears, Bone density scans
-
Colonoscopy
-
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test
-
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk labs
-
Lung cancer screening (CT scan)
-
Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening
Anyone with Medicare Part A and B qualifies. These exams are available to both current Boyd patients and others in the community. Even if you have a different primary care provider, you are welcome to schedule a consultation-only visit with us. We’ll share our recommendations with you in writing to take back to your own provider.
Greene County has an aging population, and many are missing out on these free exams. We encourage everyone who qualifies to schedule a visit—no deductible or co-pay required.
